Practical Business Tips from a Master Coach

My passion for learning continues to grow. I believe we should learn something new every day. If we have a learning mindset it helps us to be open, listen to understand, stay curious and improve each day with new information. We then have a choice to keep it, work hard to embed it/hard-wire it in our brains or look for the next new thing to learn!

One of the great benefits of being a member of The International Coach Federation (ICF) is the opportunity to learn and network through events with fellow professional coaches. The recent virtual PD with Jean-Francois Cousin MCC and the Global Chair of ICF, sparked some interest given I now dedicate all of my energy into my business. What better way than to learn business lessons from a professional coach who has been in a successful business for more than 10 years.

Jean-Francois used a story-telling technique that had us intrigued right from the beginning of the webinar. He shared his journey in business, where he started and the lessons he learnt along the way. He gave us the opportunity to stop and reflect, then answer some questions for ourselves – encouraging the group to share their thoughts and even answer each other’s questions – a true community of like-minded people. It was interactive and very well presented.

A few key takeaways for me which are relevant to coaches in their own business:

  • Find a niche (I know, easier said than done unless you are a superstar that knows exactly who you want to work with). Avoid being a jack-of-all-trades.
  • What do you want to be known as, what first impression do you give or what will people see instantly when they view your social media or website? Small tag lines and references are remembered for a long time – get your branding right and own it.
  • Invest in a mentor or trusted coach – we should all know the benefits that come with sharing your vision, articulating it, creating a strong plan, chunking it down and being held accountable. Have someone in your corner to help you stay on track and celebrate success.
  • Utilise the ICF resources - there are so many great articles, toolkits and research available for us to tap into that can help sell our services.
