Being Carbon Netural

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing Australians, in fact the world today. To quote the Australian Conservation Foundation, “it's up to all of us – individuals, business and government – to act quickly and ensure we protect this wonderful country for our kids and their kids”, by reducing our energy use and thus reducing greenhouse pollution.

While each of us alone can make a difference, collectively we can make an even bigger difference. The challenge is to translate our concern into action without being paralysed by the apparent enormity of the situation, to identify what we can do, what changes we can make, to make the commitment and then to act. .

In organising this conference we set ourselves the challenge of minimising our use of resources. Mindful that we were going to use vast energy resources in staging the event (travel, standard of accommodation, lighting, heating, materials), we made a commitment to learn as much as possible about the issue and to uncover ways to set an example and establish a precedent for the future.

It has not been a simple journey and we doubt we have fulfilled our original goal. What we have learned is that we can make a difference even by taking small steps, as Sarina Sorrenti of Leaf and Engage Consulting says, “aiming for pale green”; making incremental changes until we change ingrained habits. As coaches we understand this approach. Realistically too, it simply is not possible yet to hold a conference that is totally carbon neutral, although some precedents are being set for small events.

So let’s see what we have tried to do for this conference and for us...

Our small steps:

1. Making the commitment (June 2006) to:

  • a. minimise our use of resources
  • b. limit printed materials

2. Establishing a page on the website listing organisations offering advice on sustainable practices.

3. Conducting an audit or our own sustainability practices. This task, seemingly easy, has led to an amount of research to discover what and where exactly we have used, and will use, resources. Our best intentions have probably not been realised but we’ll post finding to the website as a guide for everyone.

4. All handouts for sessions will be available to you online so that you can review and choose to print only those handouts that are relevant to you OR simply download them onto your laptop or PDA and reference them from your hard-drive during the conference. We estimate that this will save the printing of several thousand sheets of paper.

Make your Conference attendance a carbon lite/ carbon neutral experience!

Coming to the conference? - why not use public transport. Click here for a journey planner and information on public transport in Melbourne and Victoria.

...and if you must drive, why not bring some friends or offer a ride to other delegates via our bulletin board.
